Listen "xyzpodcast x hku village commoning team (skhartsfestival special)"
Episode Synopsis
"In this episode, HKU Village Commoning Team shares the design intention behind an installation called Our Celestial Commons, designed by Vincci Mak, Scarlet Cheng, Michelle Ho, Parco Law, and Marco Yeung.
It is, indeed, a refreshing experience speaking to the designer/researcher team who designs the artwork. The outcome is a complex one, intertwining multiple 'commons' and dimensions of a place. It is almost impossible to unfold the meaning of an artwork which speaks indirectly about the meaning of a place. One would be confused to understand the meaning of the artwork or the village, and perhaps it is always beautiful when it is left to anyone to interpret freely. Nevertheless, what we could do is a thoughtful conisderation of tangible and intangible engagement with the people we work with. I find this podcast unveils a lot about the process and communication rather than the final tangible outcome - and clearly the Commoning Team did it very well. I hope you will find the essence of listening to this sharing.
'The HKU Village Commoning Team, villagers, and the “sky” come together to create a canopy that is comprised of the sky’s natural colours and patterns collected from villagers; different colours, different stories, but from the same sky. Piece by piece, story by story, all of the elements intertwine, embodying the sentiments of Kau Sai villagers. Gazing at the thousands of colours of the sky, the colourful pieces flutter in the breeze, and the light and shadow gently cast upon you − gathering under the canopy, villagers and visitors are blissfully reunited with the “sky”.', narrated by HKU Village Commoning Team. " - Gary Yeow.
The festival runs from 15 September 2023 to 14 January 2024, covering the area of Yim Tin Tsai, Sharp Island, Kau Sai Chau and High Island, through artworks, programmes and guided tours to connect the island stories.
