Episode Synopsis
"In this episode, Steph shares the design intention behind an installation called The Glazed Island, designed by himself, Keith Chan and Arnold Wong. The structure appears to be lightweight with simple hexagonal geometry, echoing the unique geological and environmental observation of Sai Kung Geopark Hexagonal Columns and Yim Tin Tsai saltpan. Lightly nestling in a rural setting, the pavilion offers, like a stage or a bench, an open interpretation of the artwork in a subtle way for any users to contemplate upon the history of the site, with innovative use of recycled glass as the key material.
'We create a small floating communal “island” that let villagers and visitors gather together. The form of the island also echoes with the geography of Yim Tin Tsai. We combine two natural elements – ‘Hexagons’ and ‘cubes’ with their strong linkage to Sai Kung Geopark Hexagonal Columns and salt crystals, forming a design language that tells the story of Yim Tin Tsai in a subtle way, and creating a unique place for people to sit, to rest, to have picnics and chats. When being viewed from different angles, the patterns and the layers of the artwork generate refreshing perspectives and illusions of floating salt cubes.', narrated by Keith, Stephen and Arnold. The festival runs from 15 September 2023 to 14 January 2024, covering the area of Yim Tin Tsai, Sharp Island, Kau Sai Chau and High Island, through artworks, programmes and guided tours to connect the island stories.
