Listen "xyzpodcast x philia chua (KLDF2022 special)"
Episode Synopsis
This series of podcasts is curated to celebrate KL Design Festival 2022, co-organized by PAM NEXT, with a theme of Resilience in Architecture. The guests were invited to share their perspectives and thoughts from different disciplines to provide a diverse understanding of being resilient in architecture and beyond. In this episode, Gary had a conversation with Philia Chua on bio-integrated design and how it could contribute to making ecologically sustainable architecture. "Very often when I listened to architects talking about nature as part of the integration into their projects, it sounds more like 'we used nature' rather than working with nature... we frame views to the mountains, we enjoy the shades from trees during the summer, but how can we work with nature? Philia shed some light on this from a biologist-architectural designer's perspective, to understand the genetics and properties of a material and how to partner up with natural materials. I was particularly intrigued by her ambition of creating buildings from seed or sculpting the future buildings that are biodegradable... challenging the perception of buildings should exist forever while embracing the beauty of decay and time."
