Listen "xyzpodcast x shenyi chua (KLDF2022 special)"
Episode Synopsis
This series of podcasts is curated to celebrate KL Design Festival 2022, co-organized by PAM NEXT, with a theme of Resilience in Architecture. The guests were invited to share their perspectives and thoughts from different disciplines to provide a diverse understanding of being resilient in architecture and beyond. In this episode, Gary had a conversation with Shen Yi about the impact of Covid-19 on the hawker culture in Malaysia. "Growing up in Malaysia, I find pasar (pagi or malam) stands as a symbol of people. The market - usually in an open air setting - represents a perfect scene of trading in a rather informal and less-structured way with the myriad of business types and products. Nevertheless, it is the epitome of sharing economy. The arrival of the global pandemic changed everything in our lifestyle, imposed questions on how we shop, how we live, how we eat... and pasar as the loose 'emporium' and the hawkers had to find a way to adapt to the new norm, slowly progressing out from the rules of social distancing to the where we are now to reflect what they could be resilient. This does not dependent on the hawkers' ability to 'evolve' with time changes, but it is part of the ecosystem supported by the consumers."
