Episode Synopsis "Honor Your Mother and Father "
In America, Asians experience their own cultural identity through a white normative consciousness which creates tension and conflict in parent-child relational dynamics. Asian-American Christians growing up in church, the fifth commandment is often taught as "obey your mother and father," rather than "'honor your mother and father." This causes a lot of heartache for Asian-Americans particularly because parental authority is so deeply entrenched in Asian heritage. Asian filial piety often displaces God from the center and gives priority to the family. How can Asian-Americans live out this commandment as disciples of Jesus Christ? In this episode, we hear about the relational dynamics our two guests, Eric Fung and Thomas Wong, have with their parents. And explore what it means to understand the fifth commandment rightly. Thank you for listening!
