Episode Synopsis "Patient Privacy and Confidentiality "

In this podcast, I stress the importance of patient privacy and confidentiality in the healthcare field. It led to the enactment of The Health Insurance  Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, which is known as HIPAA. I also provided examples of the HIPAA violations and the type of penalties a healthcare provider can encounter.  Causes Lack of encryption - Healthcare providers often times fail to encrypt patient information to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure of information.  Hacked/Phished - Many healthcare workers can become hacked by sharing their passwords, typing it in front of other people, or have passwords that can be easily guessed. People can also become victims of phishing by clicking on unfamiliar links or emails.  Unauthorized Access - People are subject to violations if they are trying to secretly retrieve information that they have access to, misplace devices that include patient information which led to someone illegally accessing the information, etc.  Solution Additional Training - This can be accomplished by signing up for an effective training program that includes informational videos, exams, and activities.
