Episode Synopsis "Exams 2020: Sound and Fury?"
There has never been a results day like it in Scotland. In 2020, when exams were cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, students received grades based on teacher estimates, and a controversial moderation exercise carried out by the SQA. Some claim that the resulting grade adjustments were necessary to maintain the credibility of the exam system. Others claim that moderation has resulted in a disproportionate downgrading the results of students from poor socio-economic backgrounds at a higher rate than others. Are teachers biased? Are students suffering due to statistical modelling? Is this ‘sound and fury signifying nothing’, or an opportunity for reform? In this discussion 'critical friends' and 'sympathetic critics' alike will try to sort out the truth from the myth, and potentially propose some solutions.
