Episode Synopsis "Episode 1: Lawyers of Uzbekistan set the course for modernisation"
After more than two decades of economic and political isolation under the former autocratic president Karimov, Uzbekistan has been implementing one reform after the other since 2016. The country has set the course for democracy, rule of law and market economy. There are also, or maybe even primarily, massive efforts to reform the justice system, to make it fair, corruption free and accessible for everyone. The legal profession in Uzbekistan is also under majour reform right now: Modern structures of the self-regulation are to be established, the professional laws are to be revised. Dr. Veronika Horrer (director at BRAK) speaks to a well-known lawyer and a member of the board of the Chamber of Advocates of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Djamshid Turdaliev, about the current reforms, the position of women in the legal profession and about the importance of the international cooperation between the national bars.
