Listen "Young African immigrants experience America for the first time (perception vs harsh reality)"

Episode Synopsis

I'm joined by my two lovely nieces on this episode to discuss how they are navigating life in America as young Nigerian immigrants (their perception vs reality). It was refreshing to hear them share their experiences as teenage girls trying to find their place in the society, They drew parallels/made comparisons between living in Nigeria and living in America. They talked about how schooling in America is different from Nigeria, the students are not very friendly because they see you as a foreigner, but the teachers are very nice and are great at teaching. They talked about how Americans don't value the "respect of elders or older people" like Nigerians do so people are not very happy when you address them as "ma or sir" here. They like a lot of things about America except for the food, they don't like most American dishes. In general, they talked about adjusting to life in America and navigating culture shocks they have experienced both in school and in the work place. They joked that Americans are weird because they do things differently than we do in Nigeria. They believe their solid upbringing and faith will keep them grounded in America as they continue to grow and expand their network. This episode is for everyone, young, old, new immigrants, parents of immigrants, etc that want to learn about the experiences of young teenage kids, their challenges and struggles in adapting to a new country.
