Una hoja seca no se mira con utilidad
ni su color es bello
ni su forma es hermosa,
pero está ahí
y por ella sabemos que hay espacio y viento,
que hay línea y textura,
ondulación y gravedad
y cuando cae
no pensamos en ella
porque en nuestra mente sigue el árbol vivo
y cuando cae el árbol, no pensamos en él,
porque nos queda el bosque
y si cayera el bosque, tampoco pensáramos
porque tenemos la ciudad
y en lugar de ríos, piscinas,
y en vez de pájaros, la radio,
y por brisa, aire acondicionado,
y en lugar de latidos, el ruido,
el bullicio de los aparatos.
Y cómo hacen falta las hojas caídas
para levantar nuevas estructuras
y cada hoja que cae produce un estruendo de latidos
de movimientos vivos,
de ahogos y anuncios;
pero no todos queremos escuchar
porque hemos perdido el bosque en nuestros sueños.



We no longer dream forests
A dry leaf is not useful to look at
nor is its color beautiful
nor is its shape beautiful,
but it is there
and from it we know that there is space and wind,
that there is line and texture,
ripple and gravity
and when it falls
we do not think of it
because in our mind the tree is still alive
and when the tree falls, we don't think of it,
because we are left with the forest
and if the forest were to fall, we would not think of it either
because we have the city
and instead of rivers, swimming pools,
and instead of birds, the radio,
and for breeze, air conditioning,
and instead of heartbeats, the noise,
the bustle of gadgets.
And how fallen leaves are needed
to raise new structures
and each falling leaf produces a thundering of heartbeats
of living movements,
of drowning and announcements;
but not all of us want to listen
because we have lost the forest in our dreams.
