Episode Synopsis

In our second episode, things start to get awkward. We use the metaphor of a Casino to describe a system that needs you to play. Wants you to play. Needs to be perceived as fair. But isn't designed to give you the information you need to win.We tell a quick story of Edward O. Thorp - a mathematician who made a career out of studying how certain games could be beaten. He became fascinated by the fact that so many people walk into various situations, follow the established 'best practice' without question and lose. The intuitive nature of some games made it hard to get people to adopt a better strategy. To make a point Thorp developed a simple system to 'beat the dealer' and began winning in Vegas to prove it. The casinos responded by creating a myth that only 'geniuses' like Thorp could do it.Since airport de-regulation, communities have been trapped in a vicious cycle where they participate in endless community efforts which give them just enough information to make losing acceptable. But there is rarely a discussion of what it actually takes to win and who actually wants to.Even more than a casino, the job of every airport is clear: grow. Given that imperative, how much of an obligation do they have to help you achieve goals that might run contrary to that mission? Is it your City's job? Your State's job? What responsibility do you have for helping to break this cycle? Topics mentioned in this video:Edward O.
