Listen "It's a Parking Lot!"

Episode Synopsis

Last week we described the process of community engagement as a Casino. This week is the first of three episodes where we try to describe what the various players are.JC opens saying that airport communities need to figure out what they want besides "making the airplanes go somewhere else!" and go for that first, before tackling Mt. Everest. The 'real' episode opens at 2:24 by describing airports as Parking Lots. In the case of Sea-Tac two parking lots: the small one known as the airfield, and the big one - the largest commercial automotive parking lot in the US.The small Parking Lot has very specific responsibilities. It does not control the roads, that's the FAA's job. We demonstrate that with the tabloid tale of Richard RussellThis is the awkward part of the episode. The big parking lot reminds us of Southcenter Mall in Tukwila. It does for many people. So we go on to compare the various positive and negative impacts for each respective city, the surrounding communities. Who benefits, who gets hurt, and why? Airports are designed to look like shopping malls. But they're not malls. We close by talking about what the Parking Lot owner can do voluntarily and use the tiny example of Fly Quiet, and the DNL65, to provide a starting point towards much, much larger negotiations.Part 150 program Dulles International Airport (2020)Fly Quiet program LaGuardia International Airport (2025)To learn the rest of the story on each of these programs: stni.info/subscribeSubscribe to our video feedFind us on all the best podcasts, including Apple and Spotify, or subscribe via RSSAppleSpotifyYoutube
