Listen "The Oxford Group’s 6 Basic Assumptions (part 6)"
Episode Synopsis
Send us a textThis episode brings us to the end of the Oxford group’s six basic assumptions. The sixth: basic assumption is 6. Those who have been “changed” must “change others”.Any of you who are familiar with the 12-step program will recognize basic assumption as being directly related to step number 12. Of course, the wording is a little different, as well as how they characterize those who are working on the program. There are major differences in the way these ideas are presented. First of all, the way I explain the third step is that I say it is equivalent to saying the word “yes” to God. I am able to discern that my Spirit is asking me to choose God over my humanity. How long does it take for this to happen? I don’t know. It is different for all. I do believe that we all have to come to grips with this question from our Spirit. It is basically saying, “I surrender”. It does not mean that I am going to become like one of the mystics in the desert. It does mean, however, that I will try, as best I can, to choose the path to God in the choices in my life. I also really like that they use the word “changed” in the Oxford Group. I think it relates directly to the results from having done the third step in the 12-step program. I become a new person. Maybe it won’t be evident to someone looking from the outside, but we will certainly know the moment we choose to accept the love of God. The word “changed” means exactly what I said above. We shall look at the world, as well as our place in it, through the eyes of God. As I’ve said before, I have never made a wrong decision that I did not, deep inside, know what the right decision would have been. After becoming “changed”, or saying “yes” to God, we will instinctively, in every situation, know what the way of God would be. I am not saying that we will always choose the way of God. I certainly haven’t always made the correct choice. As a matter of fact, after I first said yes to God, I almost felt like I was fighting Him at every turn. It took me quite a while to start feeling like I was acting with and on the behalf of God.I’m going to end here for this episode. I decided that, although on first blush, I thought it would be a one episode procedure, it’s not. There is so much in this short statement that I would like to extend the 22 episodes. So next week’s episode will be part two of this procedure.
