Episode Synopsis

Send us a textIn this episode of speaking about the third Procedure. The third procedure is: Check GuidanceThis procedur is very simply stated and implies a very simple action. However, I believe it is so much more important than it seems. If you are a frequent flyer to this podcast you are aware that my main objective as a person who has said “yes” to God, is to listen for the direction of my Spirit. There are inherent problems with this action, namely, ego and rationalization. There can be other medical and/or physical problems that may affect our listening, as well as our interpretation of what may or may not come from our Spirit. This can be a serious problem in the functioning of our humanity and in carrying out what we believe to be the directions of God. Let me give you an example.I believe I hear my Spirit direct  me to attend church/spiritual services in order to see if there is any way I can match my newfound spiritual relationships with the activities of the services and the people that are there. As a result of this (length: a conversation) with my Spirit, my ego might think it’s a good idea but that I should stay aloof from those people that normally attend the services. Now, as you know, I do not believe we have any”thing” in us that would be considered an ego. What is usually referred to as the ego, is really a sum total of our psychological makeup and a protection system we have built-in as a human being. My ego sometimes wants to override what I am hearing from my Spirit. Sometimes that other thing called rationalization wants to also modified or even eliminate my spiritual direction. In a worst-case scenario, if I am victim of some mental issue that might make it impossible for me to truly understand my Spirit or impossible to discern whether what I hear truly is my Spirit, or maybe some other made-up voiceA solution to these issues is to check out what we think we are hearing with a trusted advisor or mentor. In the Oxford group it is suggested that a person check things out with another person in the group that is considered changed. Today, those who are participating in a 12-step group might want to find someone who can be used as (what is referred to in the 12-step program) as a sponsor. I urge you to be very selective, especially if you are new to the 12-step programs and finding or choosing a sponsor. It is not necessarily the person who has lots of newcomers hanging on their every word. It is not necessarily the person who has 20 years in the 12-step  program. It is not necessarily the speaker sounds like to have it all together and makes us all laugh. It would be better to find a person as your sponsor seems to be working this 12-step program with some spiritual success and humility.I urge you to choose a sponsor as if your life depended on it, mostly because, it might!
