Episode Synopsis

📍 LocationKadam Hotel & Kambia, Sierra Leone📝 Episode NotesGood day. November 5, 2025. I’m staying at the Kadam Hotel in Kambia, which has its own well and water tank. Breakfast wasn’t included, so I picked up some fried bananas on the way. Today was special because I finally got to meet Summa, a local Peace Corps supporter, thanks to Merle Adrianze, who had recently worked in Sierra Leone.Summa and I met at a junction in Kambia part two and went to a small place to try Yatari, a local drink similar to tea or coffee. Summa is an incredible guide—bright, funny, and deeply connected to his community. He grew up in Kambia, studied in Freetown, and taught at an international school. He showed me around his town, including the hospital, which was basic but functional, and the school where he teaches. I even got to meet the school administrator and president—our conversation was lively, as driving from the Netherlands to Sierra Leone is not exactly a daily topic! We toured classrooms and saw nurses being educated. Despite limited resources, the school manages to make things work. Around 2–3 PM, Summa took me to his home to meet his wife and two daughters. His wife prepared an amazing dish with fried fish, fried bananas, and coleslaw that I could take along for the road. Driving back to the school involved navigating sandy, rocky, and bumpy roads, but it was part of the adventure. After parting ways with Summa, I headed to McKenney to stay at the Wusam Hotel, recommended by Merle. Hotels are key for good rest, Wi-Fi, and administrative tasks. The hotel even had a pool, which was a nice bonus. I plan to stay here for the next three nights before continuing the journey. It was an incredible day—meeting amazing people, experiencing local culture, and seeing Kambia from the inside.⏱️ Key Moments00:00 — Waking up at Kadam Hotel, basic amenities but water is available00:45 — Breakfast of local fried bananas01:20 — Contacting Summa, Peace Corps supporter, via Merle Adrianze02:10 — Meeting Summa at Kambia junction and trying Yatari03:00 — Touring Kambia: local hospital and school04:15 — Meeting school administrator and president, touring classrooms05:30 — Visiting Summa’s home, meeting his wife and daughters06:20 — Sampling homemade Sierra Leonean dish to go07:10 — Navigating sandy, rocky roads back to school08:00 — Departing for McKenney and checking into Wusam Hotel08:40 — Enjoying hotel amenities and planning the next three nights
