Listen "November 15 2025 - Diesel, Detours, and Discovering Freetown"
Episode Synopsis
📍 LocationFreetown Peninsula, Sierra Leone📝 Episode NotesOn November 15th, I found myself in a bit of a perceived pickle with the Land Cruiser. With two fuel tanks—one main and one sub—I had switched to the sub the day before, not realizing the main tank was nearly empty. When the sub tank’s empty light came on too, I briefly panicked. Out in the middle of nowhere is not where I want to discover a real problem.I headed back to Sarah Motors for help, but since nothing could be done until Monday, I eventually realized the fix was simple: keep driving on the sub tank and just refill the main. Confusing? Yes. But I felt good about working through it myself. With the car situation sorted, I finally had time to explore more of Freetown. The city sits on a peninsula with one major road in and out. From Waterloo you can either head north or south around the peninsula—no real east-west road because of the hills.I started at Lumley Beach near Aberdeen. The ride was refreshing, and the area had a few unexpected casinos—easy to walk into and just as easy to walk out of. The beaches varied in cleanliness, though Lumley was kept tidy and proudly promoted as the country’s prettiest beach. I don’t completely agree, but I appreciate the effort.I spent the day circling the peninsula, taking in the scenery and snapping beautiful photos. I couldn’t resist a stop at River No. 2 Beach, where you pay a small fee to access the final stretch of road. It was absolutely worth it—an incredible stretch of sand, rustic Sierra Leone vibes, local seating, and a simple hotel. On the way back, I picked up an 18-year-old who wanted to become a driver and needed a ride to Waterloo. He tried to pay, but since I was headed that way anyway, I declined. Everyone left happy. The day ended with me back at the hotel, sorting out the plan for tomorrow and feeling grateful for another day of adventure.⏱️ Key Moments00:00 — Fuel Tank Confusion I talk through the scare I had with the Land Cruiser’s dual-tank setup and how I eventually figured out the solution.03:12 — Visit to Sarah Motors I share my experience stopping by the mechanic and what I learned.05:25 — Exploring Freetown for the First Time I describe how Freetown is laid out and what it’s like navigating the peninsula.07:40 — Lumley Beach & Aberdeen My impressions of the casinos, the beach, and the vibe of the north side of the city.10:15 — Full Peninsula Loop I recount the scenic drive and the photos I captured along the way.12:05 — River No. 2 Beach I dive into my visit to one of Sierra Leone’s most beautiful beaches and the small fee to reach it.14:50 — Giving a Ride to an Aspiring Driver I share the interaction with the 18-year-old I gave a lift back to Waterloo.16:10 — Wrapping Up the Day I end the episode reflecting on what tomorrow might bring.
