Episode Synopsis

Welcome back, Azusa, Biola & Stanford Scholars! This is Miss Martin with chapter 5 of “Because of Winn-Dixie,” by Kate DiCamillo.  Thank you for sharing your questions and comments about Chapter 4. Many of you told me it was sad that Opal’s mom left, and you were wondering about her, like what was her name? How old was she? Could Opal go looking for her?   One student asked the question, “What does it mean that Opal’s mom could ‘plant a tire and grow a car?” That was figurative language, kind of like when Opal says her dad is “like a turtle, tucking his head inside of his shell.” That just means that he’s quiet. He doesn’t talk a lot. So, when Opal’s dad said her mom could “plant a tire and grow a car,” that was just a way to say Opal’s mom was very good at planting and growing things in the garden.
Readers ask questions about the story they’re reading, so I’m glad you’ve all been sharing your questions!
Now, as we listen to chapter 5, another thing that good readers do is they make a movie in their mind as they read. You might close your eyes and imagine what’s happening in the story. You may even pause the story, so you could envision what’s happening, before you press play and listen to the rest of the story.
*Chapter 5*
Well, what did you think about that chapter? As you read, could you imagine Winn-Dixie catching the mouse and bringing it to the preacher?  What part of the story did you imagine?  Please send a message to your teacher, you can either draw a picture of the part of the story that you imagined, or you could just write a sentence or two about the part that you were imagining. We look forward to hearing from you, and I’ll see you next time when we of “Because of Winn-Dixie.”
