During today’s chapter, I want you to think about Opal. What are some things that Opal does in the story. What could we say about her character? Character means, what is the person like?
For example, in the first chapter, what’s something that Opal did? She rescued Winn-Dixie from going to the pound. What could we say about her character? We could say she loves dogs. We could say she’s caring. We could say she’s brave to stand up to the manager.
Or what about in chapter 2? One thing Opal does is she tells Winn-Dixie about her mom. What can we say about Opal’s character? We could say she’s lonely. We could say she misses her mom.
As you’re listening to this next chapter, think about what you know about Opal, and what could we say about her character?

Today's assignment, that you're going to turn in to your teacher, is on a sheet of paper, draw a detailed picture of Opal. Around Opal, write the words that describe her character traits. Ex: Brave, caring, dog-lover, smart, helper.  Send that picture to your teacher. We look forward to seeing your ideas!
