Welcome back to chapter 9 of “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Previously on Winn-Dixie, Opal wanted to buy a leash and collar for Winn-Dixie, but she couldn’t afford it with her allowance. So, Opal asked Otis, the person who worked at the pet store, if she could get a job there sweeping the floors and cleaning cages. Opal said Winn-Dixie would have to come inside the store with her, because he doesn’t like to be left behind. She let Winn-Dixie in the store, and the parrot, Gertrude, sat on Winn-Dixie’s head. Since Gertrude liked Winn-Dixie, Otis let Opal have the job at the pet store.
In this next chapter we will see the 2 brothers, Dunlap and Stevie Dewberry. We’ve heard their names before, but we haven’t really gotten to know them. We’ll also meet one new important character. Her name is Gloria Dump. Pay attention to these new characters. What do they say and do? What are they like?  Be ready to share your thoughts when the chapter is done.
