In 1863, Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, sent a letter to Pope Pius IX. In response, the pope addressed Davis as the “Illustrious and Honorable Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America, Richmond,” which sparked the myth that the pope was the sole European Sovereign to recognize the CSA.
