XOX Floral - The Sustainable Florist

A podcast for flower lovers and florists wanting to connect with others in the New Zealand flower market. Kristen Somerville of XOX Floral, a sustainable, seasonal florist studio in Taupo, NZ talks to florists and flower growers about what it's like operating in such a small, isolated market. This is for those on their floristry journey, craving a connection with others in the industry but scared to reach out in such a small, competitive market for fear of rejection. There are so few jobs, that most florists have to create their own work, learning by doing and making mistakes. This is about creating a community of flower lovers learning from each other and making our industry stronger as a result. It can be a nerve wracking journey taking what you love and turning it into a business, especially if you're wanting to do things in a more sustainable, ethical way. There's also the issue of balancing your creative ideals on the one hand and customer demands on the other. XOX Floral started out as a hobby business in the garage but is now a full service florist with its own premises. It has embraced the sustainable, slow flower movement, using only New Zealand grown flowers and doesn't use floral foam, or any sprayed, dyed or bleached florals in its work, but it's not always easy standing by your principles when customers don't necessarily understand your ideals.
