Episode Synopsis "Instead of the news, the dawn chorus"
It occurred to me the other day that this might be the most vast and attentive audience spring has ever known. We‘re watching buds and blossoms emerge in awe, asking them to bring some hopefulness to the strangeness of our days. It’s a lot to ask of a season but nature persists in her unfolding and, for me at least, is delivering the copious beauty that I so need.I’ve been waking up before sunrise, assuming it was waves of worry causing me to stir. Yet I’ve realised that it’s not anxiety rousing me before my alarm clock shares the day’s headlines, but the sound of birds outside my window. The dawn chorus is quite a noise. A cacophony of trills and peeps and coos and tweets plus the occasional atonal squawk down the chimney from a jackdaw. In the hours before there’s light enough to seek food, when darkness still hides them from predators, the birds are defending their mating ground and call out to prospective partners with the most emphatic of their songs. My piqued curiosity has been amplified by isolation so I’m desperate to learn which chirp belongs to who. I’ve downloaded apps and cruised birdwatching websites but I just don’t have a discerning enough ear. Especially when the birds don’t have the courtesy of taking it in turns to sing. When I do manage to tune into one song, I can’t hold it in my head long enough to find it amongst all the online audio files. The app cycles through possibilities like a slot machine spinning as it tries to identify one bird’s cheep from another’s. If an algorithm can’t help me, I don’t stand a chance on my own!So I’ve resigned myself to simply enjoying the 5:30am symphony as the divine piece of musical chaos that it is. And I’ve attached 2 or so minutes to this newsletter for you to listen to as well. If you have any clues on whose pipes are piping, I’d love to hear from you 🌿 This is a public episode.
