Dr. Sean Cole begins a sermon series by exploring four famous Christmas hymns that present some incredible truths about Christ and our salvation.
This sermon examines “Joy to the World,” written by Isaac Watts
Originally, “Joy to the World” was NOT a Christmas hymn. There is no mention of the baby Jesus, Bethlehem, the star, the shepherds or angels, or Mary and Joseph. In fact, Watts believed this Psalm was a prophecy about Christ, primarily about His Second Coming to judge the nations and to rule and reign.
As you read Psalm 98, you begin to see clearly how Isaac Watts paraphrased or poetically reworded this Psalm in his lyrics.
Here’s the big idea or central theme of Psalm 98: A salvation so amazing deserves a joy so overflowing!
The Psalm has three distinct parts and gives us THREE reasons to express an overflowing joy in such an amazing salvation.
