Romans 7 is considered one of the most difficult and controversial chapters in Romans.
At the end of Chapter 5, Paul makes a distinction between two and only two kinds of people:
Those in Adam who are unregenerate
Those who are in Christ, who are regenerate
In Chapter 6, Paul emphatically teaches that those who are now “in Christ" have decisively died to sin as an enslaving power.
So, here’s the question: Have you been set free from the enslaving, dominating power and penalty of sin or not?
We have to conclude that we have indeed been decisively set free from sin.
Here’s the problem: Why do we still sin? Why do we still do the things we know we shouldn’t do?
Why do we struggle with doing the things we should do and fail to do them?
IF we have died to sin, been set free from sin, and our old man has been crucified, then should we not conclude that we will never sin again? That we can reach a plane of sinless perfection?
Chapter 7 describes the everyday life of a regenerate Christian who still struggles with sin.
