Many guardians of English fear that Internet instant messaging will harm the language. They cringe at the slang, shorthand, and sloppy grammar and worry the IM style will bleed into more formal writing. A new study from American University linguistics professor Naomi Baron suggests that language grumps don't have much to worry about. Baron studied thousands of instant messages exchanged by college students.
