Listen "Ep. 9 - Insider Edition: ChronoTrack Timer, Tom Kelley"
Episode Synopsis
In today’s episode, Mike is joined by Tom Kelley, Director of Race Scoring for the New York Road Runners. Tom leads the timing team at the TCS New York City Marathon, the largest marathon in the world, plus 59 more events throughout the year. Yes, you read that correctly, 60 events a year, all in New York City.
What you might not know about Tom is that he is currently the longest-tenured employee at NYRR with a career spanning 31 years. He is in fact the longest-tenured employee to ever have worked at NYRR. Tom talks about how he got his start with NYRR and how he was able to develop a passion for his craft by growing in the org under incredible leadership throughout the years.
And while the non-profit organization has grown into what seems like a large corporation, New York Road Runner’s mission still remains the same as it was when it was just a running club: create a sense of community and inclusion for runners throughout all five NYC boroughs.
For the Timers listening, you’ll get to geek out over the logistics of the TCS New York City Marathon and hear about the ways the team has developed their own tools to create scalability while timing 695,000 runners annually.
Tom ends the conversation by speaking to what he thinks/hopes might be the next big thing in timing and gives us a few great suggestions for who to bring on the show next.
Happy listening!
