With the contemporary national focus on Indian languages and bhasha literatures, there seems to have come about a crisis of legitimacy for studies in English literature, and if there is anything that the consumer of English education best desires, it is at best the ability to speak and write in English, good English. But to speak and write well in English in any language, for that matter, one needs to understand that there are certain images which can be expressed beautifully in a certain language. Languages acquire their distinction for the images that they give expression to.
