Episode Synopsis "Tiny Tank to a garage full of wonder."
Hello, my name is Joseph or Joe for short. I was born in 1981, an 80's kid and 90’s teens, this really isn't that important; but the first part of what I am talking about takes places in-between those two amazing decades. I remember having what was maybe a small little fish tank, I can't remember the size since a was just a kid, I was maybe about 9 or 10 at this point. In this tank I had a goldfish, zebra danio, and a Plecostomus better known as an algae eater. My very first tank, and boy was I was already off to a bad start. You see the zebra danio was a schooling fish, so he needs a few more companions in that tank with him. Gold fish produce a lot of waste in fish tanks, so believe it or not a tank that size is way too small for him, and don't get me started on goldfish bowls either. The algae eater which at the time was as long as maybe a half dollar, would eventually be as big as the tank itself. It was my mother and stepfather who got me all that stuff so they were new to the hobby themselves, but something would change in the next couple of years. We moved to a bigger house across the street which had a good size garage. Bear with me since this was almost 30 years ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. My step father had left his job at the pawn shop he worked at so he could devote his time to converting the garage to a tropical fish store. I did not know if he had a business license, but I was too young to care. We had rows of tanks filled with beautiful African Cichlids, so it was a site to behold. It garnered enough attention that my 6th grade class went on a field trip to my house. My mom even made homemade burritos, and my classmates saw are bird Avery we had built that had all kinds of different birds in it. This made me very popular that year in school. All good things must come to an end though. My mom would divorce my stepfather, which I was happy about because he had become a huge jerk. So, for years I would not own a fish tank due to either lack of space, money, or my mom just plain saying NO! But the urge to get a tank became stronger to resist. I eventually got a tank once I was out of high school and since have had many types of tanks throughout the years. I would sometimes take a break from them due to life getting in the way such as serving in the Army or having kids. But now that I am a bit older, I have the freedom to do what I want. The aquarium industry is thriving at the moment since tanks have become cheaper and easier to have and maintain. Some people even consider it a form of art due to the time and effort they put into their tanks. It has to me become less of a hobby and more of a passion. This is a passion I want to spread to other people who are either in the hobby or looking to join it. With decades of experience, I feel I have the knowledge to turn other people's hobby in to a passion.
