Listen "Country Today - October 22nd"
Episode Synopsis
Farmers in the Western District are welcoming the much needed rainfall overnight, reporting 12-18mm, and while it may not be enough for strong yields it certainly will help what has been described as the season which never really broke. We'll hear from an Agronomist in Horsham. Now let’s head South of Horsham where one farmer says he has had the most challenging season to date. After a false break on Anzac Day followed by the most severe wind and sandblasting he's seen in all his years farming, Russell Heard is relieved with last night's 'money making' rain. The canola price outlook is on the improve, with China back in the market and ongoing trade tensions with Canada working in Australia’s favour, local growers are in a strong position heading into 2026. Recent revisions to the Sheep Processor Trading Conditions index raised July’s figure to 1% from 0.4%, reflecting slightly improved returns from co-products, but processors continue to face historically thin returns due to high farmgate prices. The National Centre for Farmer Health is preparing for a revamp of their Agrisafe program, which provides comprehensive health and wellbeing checkups for farmers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
