Listen "October 12 2025 - Crossing the Desert: From Nouadhibou to Nouakchott"
Episode Synopsis
📍 Location:Nouakchott, Mauritania📝 Episode Notes:October 12, 2025 — Today I set out from Nouadhibou on my way to Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. The distance between the two cities is close to 500 kilometers, and I wasn’t sure what to expect along the way. The road turned out to be surprisingly good for the most part—some rough patches, but mostly paved and smooth enough to cruise comfortably around 70 to 80 km/h.The first stretch took me back along the familiar peninsula I’d driven before, but this time in daylight, and it was incredible to finally see the vast, desolate beauty of the Sahara spread out before me. Early on, I caught sight of the famous iron ore train coming into Nouadhibou—an endless line of cars, with a few adventurous souls perched on top of the ore.We were stopped at a few checkpoints, as usual, but by now that’s just part of the rhythm of travel here. The scenery changed constantly—rocky plains, loose sand, and the occasional sign of life: nomads, a few camels, and goats that seemed to belong to no one. At one point, I passed a surprising line of wind turbines generating power in the middle of nowhere.Eventually, I rolled into Nouakchott by evening and checked into a hotel that was far fancier than expected—but after a long day in the desert, it felt well-deserved. The city is definitely a step up from Nouadhibou, though it still carries that same rugged charm. Thanks for joining me on the road today—see you tomorrow for the next leg of the journey.⏱ Key Moments:00:00 — Leaving Nouadhibou at dawn00:45 — Driving through the Sahara peninsula in daylight01:15 — Spotting the legendary iron ore train02:10 — Endless checkpoints and shifting desert scenery03:05 — Discovering wind turbines and nomad huts in the desert04:00 — Arriving in Nouakchott and settling into the city
