Listen "The 3 Habits to Peak Performance in 2023: A New Year Action Plan for Busy Professionals"
Episode Synopsis
Show Notes: 1. What is peak performance?
“The execution of an action” “something accomplished”
Sculpting the best version of yourself.
And doing it VERY well over a long period of time
The more athletes I work with the more interested I become in the relationship between mind and body where I’m seeing that fitness promotes more than just visible abs, round butt and smaller tummy.
Performers at the highest level possess more than just strong legs and coordination.
I’ve been in this space for over 8 years now and recently I find myself circulating through the classic hierarchy of competence- I knew very little, picked up enough to be dangerous, worked on my weaknesses and worked up the ladder to now I understand that I know very little.
2. What determines one’s peak performance? Subjective/objective measures? Both?
Humans are MASSIVELY complex and live in a multi-factorial environment
Periodization schemes should be questioned- You can’t control adaptation of a complex organism in a multi factorial system through standard periodization…
The most common answer in our industry is “it depends”
There are examples of unicorns everywhere.
Yes, both subjective and objective.
We should always be tracking both.
I fill out a wellness questionnaire daily, record body comp metrics monthly, and track metrics related to my current physical goals every other month
3. What are the 3 habits to peak performance?
It took me FOREVER to distill these down…
Big rocks, mind pump
Sleep
Move- fun & wellness
One of the biggest mistakes in health and wellness is not spending more time doing the activity you love.
Consistent/Sustainable/Disciplined Habits with intent
Other individual items- hydration, protein, step count/movement, etc
4. What is the first step someone should take if they’re having trouble sticking to their action plan?
Pair the action down- 100oz of water daily to 75oz daily
Make it sustainable
Tortoise & the hare
Fitness and performance should be as habitual as brushing your teeth or preparing your dinner
5. Key takeaways
The simple stuff done consistently is the most powerful performance enhancer
We live in a hyper-gimmicky society…
6. What does back to body basics mean to you?
It means cutting out the noise in the fitness space and listening for what really matters, for what is really going to enhance our performance and help us achieve the best version of ourselves.
We all have this image of fitness in our minds- Liver King, World Cup athletes, CrossFit, NFL. We’re led to believe fitness is this sexy, self absorbed thing for the physical shell only. Getting back to basics in fitness to me means recognizing that the mind and body, what we say and what we do are intimately linked. One of the legacies I want to leave in this space is opening the door to seeing fitness as a way to tap into and combine our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves. The Greeks/Roman’s/BPR Institute. Fitness has more influence on our lives than just losing weight. If you resonate with performing or working towards peak performance you won’t get there with a 30 day cleanse or 6 week program, insane crash diets or training programs that leave you in a sweaty heap every day. There are agreed upon principles and methods… That’s why consistency, sustainability, and habit creation are a cornerstone of my discourse and approach to health, fitness and Performance.
