Episode Synopsis "How does poverty affect student achievement?"

How does poverty affect student achievement? Students who live in poverty are affected by stress. This stress is caused by housing conditions, poor living conditions, and other factors. Physical and cognitive development are at risk when a student is under stress.  This creates on the students a lack of motivation and desire to succeed. In pages 110 and 111, Nieto and Bodediscusses the “racial discipline gap” that impacts minority groups such as Latino, African American, and Native American students. This means that discipline policies are not practiced justly. Moreover, students living in poverty along with students of color are more likely to be suspended or expelled. The selection states “…students who receive suspensions are more likely to drop out of high school.”
