Episode Synopsis

Season 6, Podcast 123, Isaiah 63:1-19, “Wherefore Art Thou Red in Thine Apparel?”A favorite theme of Isaiah is the Second Coming of Christ. For the wicked it shall be a frightful time; for the righteous it shall be glorious. Notice the question and answer dialogue. Let us assume that it is the voice of the prophet Isaiah asking the questions. He is speaking for the righteous for he finds it glorious. The one who answers the questions is Jesus Christ himself. It is Christ who says, “I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”Isaiah 63:1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.Traditionally Edom was an enemy to Israel. Bozrah was Edom’s capitol. It is ironic that Christ is coming out of Edom for he does come with both vengeance and healing. “Dyed garments” symbolizes a warrior or conqueror. The image is also used by John the Revelator.Revelation 19:1-2And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.It appears that the blood on the Savior’s vesture is from Edom or Babylon or the world and does not apply to the righteous. The Savior is coming out of Edom whom as a warrior he conquered to redeem his people. The righteous are invited to the marriage supper of the lamb. I continue with John.Revelation 19:7-9Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.The saints are dressed in white. They are prepared for the marriage supper of the lamb. Christ is seen as “glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” The righteous rejoice that he has come to save them. John presents an awe inspiring image of the Savior at his Second Coming.Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.Isaiah echoes that same sentiment. Isaiah 63:2Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? The Saviour’s answer is glorious to the righteous, fearful for the unrighteous.Isaiah 3:3-4I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
