Episode Synopsis
Season 6, Podcast 120, Isaiah 61:1-11, “The Spirit of the Lord God is Upon Me.”The personal pronoun “me” in Isaiah 61 is the Messiah. In other words, Isaiah is speaking as if he were Christ. Christ defines his divine mission from the Father.Isaiah 61:11 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Our Savior clearly defines his relationship to the Father. He has come to earth entirely to do the will of the Father in all things. Again, let’s tie in that most beautiful of all scriptures John 3:16-17. When we think of Christ that scripture should be at the forefront of our minds.“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”The Father endows his Son with the spiritual tools necessary to save mankind: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Christ; The Father anointed Christ to preach good tidings to the meek; The Father sent Christ to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and to open the prison to those who are bound by Satan. It is as if the father placed his hands upon the head of his beloved Son before he even came to earth and ordained him to save the world. That means that the entire plan of Salvation was ordained before the earth was even created. God the Father saw everything in advance and prepared for it.Let’s refer again to the words of the Lord to Job.Job 38:4-7 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Also speaking of our premortal existence, Solomon declares,Ecclesiastes 12:77 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.King David, speaking of our divine heritage, called us ‘children of the most High.Psalm 82:66 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.It brings to mind the words of the Apostle Peter who said, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” Isaiah informs us,Isaiah 42:55 Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:Paul also taught that we are the offspring of God.Acts 17:2929 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.Paul adds that God is the Father of our Spirits.Hebrews 12:99 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?In Isaiah 61, Christ further defines his commission from the Father.
