Episode Synopsis
Season 6, Podcast 119, Isaiah 60:1-22, “Arise, Shine; for thy Light is Come.”Isaiah, the prophet of our own day, focuses on the scattering and gathering of Israel. We must keep in mind, however, that the Israel Isaiah is speaking of refers to all the seed of Abraham which includes all gentiles who embrace the full doctrine of Christ, who keep his commandments, and who endure to the end.Isaiah primarily focuses on Christ, prophesying that he will come to earth, live among men, be crucified, atone for our sins through his blood, and be resurrected. Though he speaks of it earlier, the primary focus of the last 16 Chapters of Isaiah are on the Second Coming of Christ and beyond, even to the end of the world. The Second Coming of Christ and the final gathering of Israel are coterminous events. A third event connected to the gathering of Israel is the gathering of the gentiles into the covenant people of Abraham. All who come unto Christ, Jew or Gentile, shall be candidates for celestial glory. The scope of Isaiah 60 is rather incredible, for he addresses not only the gathering of Israel, the Second Coming of Christ and the Millennium, but he also addresses the final reckoning or end of the world when the Celestial City, New Jerusalem, comes down from heaven and earth becomes celestialized, the eternal home of God.I have often spoken of the poetry of Isaiah. Though I rely upon scholars to teach me the words of the Hebrew and Greek languages as they apply to Biblical interpretation, I love the King James Version because of the beauty of its language. None is greater than the following. It lifts one’s eyes to heaven.Isaiah 60:11 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. How better to capture that glorious moment when the light of Christ is brought again to the world? Typical of Isaiah, he plays with light and darkness.Isaiah 60:22 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. The Lord, of course, is inviting everyone to come to the light and to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ. The gathering of Israel shall be aided by the Gentiles who because of the light become, through their righteousness, the children of Abraham.Isaiah 60:33 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. The word ‘Renaissance’ originally referred to the cultural, artistic, intellectual, and scientific movement in Europe beginning in the 14th century. ‘Renaissance’ means rebirth or more particularly “to be born again.” That is a familiar phrase to Christians. In the above Isaiah speaks of another Renaissance that occurs just prior to the Second Coming of Christ. He describes the new Renaissance by comparing it to an increase of light. Isaiah says the earth shall be ‘full of the knowledge of the Lord.’All who are converted to Christ will glory in his return.Isaiah 60:4-54 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. After centuries of being in the dark, the light of Christ when he returns, shall fill the earth. The rebuilding of Jerusalem will be a world event. The following ancient cities symbolize the world. “Isles” suggest that the entire world will be involved in the gathering of Israel.
