In the third week of Mental Health Month Áine chats with Mohammad Al Khafaji, CEO of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA).
I speak with Mohammad Al Khafaji, CEO of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA), the peak national body representing ethnic and multicultural communities in Australia. Mohammad is the former CEO of Welcome to Australia, Hon. Secretary of FECCA and a member of the SBS Community Advisory Committee. Born in Iraq, he came to Australia in 2003 via Syria as a refugee when he was 13. He is passionate about changing the national conversation around asylum seekers to a positive one through education and grass roots movements.  Mohammad believes cultural diversity makes us richer as a society and he is passionate about ensuring the voice of new and emerging communities are heard and are represented.
Mohammad discusses the development of the proposed Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative, a national voice to provide leadership and advice on policy, research, and practice to improve access and equity and achieve better health outcomes for multicultural Australians.
