SERIES: TitusThe Public Life of a PastorTitus 1:7-9He Must Be a Man of Godly Conduct (1:7)● Overseers have two overarching qualities:○ They manage God’s church.○ They must have a good reputation.● What he must NOT be:○ Arrogant: He must not be stubborn or always insisting on his own way.■ A pastor must be submissive to Christ and collaborative with others—not a lone ranger.○ Quick-tempered: He must not be easily provoked.■ An angry man cannot care for souls. He wounds instead of heals.○ Drunkard: His judgment must not be clouded by alcohol.■ A pastor must be clear-minded, not controlled by substances or pleasure.○ Violent: He must not be physically or verbally abusive, bullying, or threatening.■ The shepherd’s hands are for blessing, not bruising. Power must never be misused.○ Greedy: He must not use the ministry to gain money, status, or perks.■ The elder is not in it for what he can get, but for what he can give.He Must Be a Man of Godly Character (1:8)● “But…”○ Godly leadership is not just avoiding sin…○ Godly leadership is about actively embodying Christlikeness.● What he MUST be:○ Hospitable: He must be a “lover of strangers.”■ A pastor must open his home and his heart to others.○ A Lover of Good: He must delight in what is excellent and godly.■ A pastor’s values will shape the church culture.○ Self-controlled: He must show maturity in how he thinks.■ A pastor must not be rash or impulsive.○ Upright: He must show integrity in his relationships by treating people fairly.■ A pastor must not show favoritism or manipulate others.○ Holy: He must be devout, having a deep and thriving relationship with God.■ The pastor must not only do right but be right with God. His inner life fuels public ministry.○ Disciplined: He must be able to control his body.■ A pastor who cannot master his emotions and impulses is a liability for a church.He Must Be a Man with Godly Convictions (1:9)● Be devoted to the truth. “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught…”● Be diligent to teach. “So that he may be able to give instruction…”○ The truth must be preached.○ The truth must be protected.“Take heed to yourselves, lest your example contradict your doctrine…lest you unsay with your lives what you saywith your tongues; and be the greatest hinderers of the success of your own labors.”– Richard Baxter
