Listen "The Herald and the King"
Episode Synopsis
This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 3:1-17. Matthew shows us that John the Baptist is the fulfillment of what the prophet Isaiah said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight." John the Baptist is also the fulfillment of the prophecies of Elijah who would be the messenger of the Lord to prepare the way. John the Baptist is the herald who goes before the King to prepare the people for the arrival of Jesus. Jesus is baptized by John not because Jesus needed to repent or be cleansed, but to show that Jesus would identify with sinners and give his life to save them. As we seek to follow Jesus we heed the words of John the Baptist, "Bear fruit in keeping with repentance" (Matthew 4:8). We are saved by grace alone through faith alone. This saving faith in Jesus however, does not remain alone. True and saving faith demonstrates itself in a life of repentance and abiding in Jesus. In the person and work of Jesus we can be called beloved children with whom God is well pleased. From this new identity in Christ we seek to live a life continually conforming to Jesus and led by the Holy Spirit.
