Listen "The Seven Woes"
Episode Synopsis
This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 23:1-39. The text could be broken up into the following three sections: 1) The warnings (vv 1-12)2) The seven woes (vv 13-36)3) The weeping (vv 37-39) This teaching of Jesus shows us show us that Jesus condemns self-righteousness. Jesus exposing the scribes and Pharisees serves as a warning to us. We are prone to focus merely on outward appearance and image. We can tend to crave being seen as beautiful and good. When we seek to clothe ourselves in our own goodness and righteousness apart from faith in God, we hide from God and refuse to come to Jesus. We are deceived and blinded by our own pride to think God cares more about external performance than whole-hearted faith. Jesus' teaching exposes us that we might humble ourselves and come to Him for heart transformation and renewal. Jesus is willing and open. He calls us to find cover in the shelter of His wings. May God give us grace to turn to Jesus and continually come to Him for a renewed heart.
