Listen "183 - What You Do When Things Go Wrong"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Cindy Esliger looks at a better way we can choose to respond when things go wrong. We tend to spin out in overthinking or tighten our grip on control when setbacks happen at work, but neither of those responses leads to meaningful progress. Cindy suggests focusing on what’s actually within our control by reclaiming our power. It’s not about pretending everything is fine; it’s about learning to move forward with clarity by reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth. How we respond to setbacks can reinforce our frustration and self-doubt if we allow ourselves to overthink on overdrive or slip into control freak mode. But when things start falling apart, we need to ask what is actually within our control. Reframing our thinking involves understanding positional power and personal power. Cindy explains that positional power is the power that our workplace controls. It can evaporate. Personal power, on the other hand, comes from within and doesn’t require anyone else’s permission. Personal power allows us to respond thoughtfully instead of with a knee-jerk reaction. Cindy offers insight into the psychology of control, specifically the locus of control, which is the belief system that shapes whether we think life happens to us or because of us. High internal locus of control believe our actions shape outcomes, whereas high external locus of control believes in forces like luck or fate. Both extreme ends of the spectrum can be harmful. To find balance, Cindy offers three questions to ask ourselves the next time something goes wrong: 1. Do we blame ourselves or others first? 2. Do we believe success is based on effort, relationships, or luck? And 3. When someone else is struggling, do we think that could be us or that it would never happen to us? Cindy guides us through what the answers to those questions mean and how to reframe our thinking about setbacks.
