Listen "A jazz band reheasal with some new drumming toys"
Episode Synopsis
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=steevc/klcxapfj My band @themoonshots have a gig coming up so we needed to get together to run through the tunes. As well as me on drums there is @purplesinger on piano, @daniellemurray on clarinet and @renaissancegeek on flute.
I missed the last rehearsal as I had a bad back, but I am back in shape now. Since then I have been to the UK Drum Show where I bought a little splash cymbal from Dream. It is a nice addition to my available sounds. I had to get an arm to mount it and that clips on one of the drums. A while before that I bought a cheap cowbell that is also fun. The red ball thing is not really part of the kit, but sometimes it sits on a cymbal.
A more recent addition is this 'sizzle' that adds some interest to the ride cymbal. There are always more things you can add to a drum kit. You may notice the clamp on the cymbal that is quicker to release than unscrewing a wingnut.
I am including some excerpts of what we played this time, but this is a rehearsal and so things are works in progress. I get to play a variety of styles, but just mastering the basic swing jazz beat could take years. I have to take my own snare drum and cymbals to the studio as those are the things that people tend to break.
We had a good session and have enough tunes to play for a while at our upcoming gig. I hope to get some video of that to share with you. I will be taking my whole kit to that, but it easily fits in the back of the car.
I have a drum lesson this week, so I will go through a few things with my teacher.
