Listen "A universe of Lego"
Episode Synopsis
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=steevc/xmpzabbv I just finished another Lego kit that I treated myself to, thanks to some vouchers I was given. I have always been fascinated with space and I also love mechanisms, so this kit ticked some boxes. It is a basic orrery that shows how bodies move relative to each other. It is very much not to scale, but that would not be viable. I pulled some numbers out of my head during the video, but I suspect that the Sun would be huge in proportion to this Earth.
As I said, it seems fairly accurate in terms of how long it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth over a yearly cycle. There are a lot of gears in there and someone did the sums. The mechanism is very smooth and easy to turn.
Younger kids could build this, but might need some help as there are a lot of steps and you need to get things right at each stage. I had to double check some steps. As usual with these big kits there were a small parts left over, but there were none missing. You do have to affix a few stickers for the months and lunar phases.
It could be a nice educational aid. You can demonstrate how the tilt of the Earth causes the seasons.
A great gift for those flat-Earther Lego fans around the globe.
