She suffered from epilepsy her whole life, causing her to have to take cocktails of drugs for treatment that dramatically affected her quality of life. Finally at age 38 she had a VERY experimental brain surgery, first to find out where her epilepsy was centered in her brain and then to remove the damaged portions. The surgery took 70% of her hippocampus, which controls memory, and 40% of her amygdala, which controls fear. She was left full of fear and trying to relearn to read, write and struggling to recognize even close family members.
