Listen "Spain’s Traffic Flow Settling into Autumn Patterns, but Traffic Warnings Ahead!"

Episode Synopsis

The road traffic outlook for the week starting Monday, 29th September 2025, is generally characterised by typical autumn conditions and the steady resumption of normal commuter patterns across Spain, following the end of the summer season.

Commuter traffic is expected to be heavy, particularly in the major metropolitan areas of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville, during the morning (07:30 – 09:30) and late afternoon/early evening (17:30 – 19:30) peak hours. However, local disruptions are anticipated in specific areas due to ongoing festivals and a major sporting fixture in Madrid, which will require careful planning by drivers. The DGT is not reporting any nationwide special operations this week, though local police forces will be managing specific event-related congestion.

Monday, 29th September 2025

The working week begins with the standard heavy traffic flows on access routes into all major cities.

Madrid: Routine delays are expected on the M-30 and access motorways (A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5, A-6).

Barcelona: The effects of the recent Festes de la Mercè (Festival of Our Lady of Mercy) may still cause minor residual congestion or temporary infrastructure changes in the city centre. Drivers should remain alert for local police instructions.

General: Standard school run and commuter traffic will be the main challenge in urban and peri-urban areas.

Tuesday, 30th September 2025

A generally typical mid-week traffic day, with a significant exception in the capital.

Madrid: A major sporting event will impact traffic in the late afternoon and evening. The Atlético de Madrid vs. Eintracht Frankfurt UEFA Champions League match will be played at the Cívitas Metropolitano Stadium. Heavy congestion is expected from approximately 18:00 on the A-2 motorway and the M-40 orbital road, especially around exits leading to the stadium area. The local police (Policía Local) will implement traffic control measures and diversions around the stadium precinct.

Logroño (La Rioja): Minor local traffic increases are possible due to the ongoing Fiestas de San Mateo (St. Matthew’s Festival), particularly around the city centre.

Wednesday, 1st October 2025

Normal weekday traffic is forecast.

General: Commuter flow on the national network (A- and AP- routes) is anticipated to be free-flowing outside of the aforementioned peak hours for urban centres. No major nationwide issues or DGT operations are currently announced.

Thursday, 2nd October 2025

No major traffic incidents or events are currently flagged by DGT or regional authorities for this day.

Asturias: The Gijón International Film Festival starts today, which may cause minor, localised increases in traffic and parking issues in central Gijón near the venues.

Galicia (O Grove, Pontevedra): The start of the long-running Seafood Festival (Festa do Marisco) will begin to draw an increase in local and regional visitors, particularly from mid-afternoon, causing minor congestion on the PO-504 and access roads into O Grove.

Friday, 3rd October 2025

The end of the working week will see increased movement on long-distance routes, combined with the usual peak commuter flows.

General: Traffic volumes will begin to significantly increase from 16:00, especially on the main exit routes from major cities towards coastal areas and second homes. Routes to watch for are the AP-7 (Catalonia and Valencian Community), A-4 (Madrid to Andalusia), and the A-3 (Madrid to Valencia).

Galicia (O Grove, Pontevedra): Expect heavy local traffic on roads leading to the town as the Seafood Festival attracts weekend visitors.

The Weekend

The weekend of Saturday, 4th October and Sunday, 5th October 2025 is forecast to be moderately busy on the road network, driven by domestic leisure travel, a local festival in Aragón, and the main return operations on Sunday evening.

Saturday, 4th October: Traffic will be busy in the morning, between 10:00 and 13:00, with movements to coastal, leisure, and recreational areas.

Crevillent (Alicante, Valencian Community): The start of the Fiesta of the Moors and Christians will lead to local road closures and increased congestion in the town and on the surrounding N-325 and nearby AP-7 exits.

Zaragoza (Aragón): Increased regional traffic is expected as the city prepares for its main festival, Fiestas del Pilar, which officially begins later this week.

Sunday, 5th October: The primary challenge will be the return operation, with heavy traffic expected on routes back into major urban centres, particularly from 18:00 until 22:00.

Congestion Hotspots: The AP-7 (especially towards Barcelona and Valencia), the A-4 and A-5 (towards Madrid), and major ring roads around capital cities will be heavily affected. Drivers should consider travelling before 17:00 or after 22:00 to avoid the worst delays.

Next Week

The following week will feature the significant national holiday of Día de la Hispanidad (Spain’s National Day) on Sunday, 12th October, which is observed as a bank holiday on Monday, 13th October in many regions. This will lead to a major DGT special operation spanning the weekend and Monday, with high volumes of long-distance traffic expected to cause substantial delays and congestion from Friday, 10th October, through to Monday evening. We will provide a detailed breakdown of the DGT operation for this Puente (long weekend) next Sunday.

Road Safety Pre-Warning

Please be advised that next week, the DGT will be launching a special campaign focused on Distractions While Driving, in conjunction with the Europe-wide initiatives of Roadpol (European Roads Policing Network). This campaign will involve increased surveillance and enforcement across the country. More specific details on the timing and focus of this operation will be provided in our next weekly report on Sunday, 5th October.
