Spain Road Forecast: Post-Puente Return and Northern Sporting Events

Listen "Spain Road Forecast: Post-Puente Return and Northern Sporting Events"

Episode Synopsis

The general traffic forecast for the week beginning Monday, 3rd November 2025, suggests a highly variable traffic picture across the national road network in Spain.

While the beginning of the week is likely to see a continuation of increased traffic volumes due to the extended “puente” (long weekend) in several regions following All Saints’ Day (Saturday, 1st November), the traffic is expected to normalise into a typical working week pattern from Tuesday onwards.

Key congestion points will be around major urban centres during morning and evening rush hours, particularly in Madrid and Barcelona, with additional regional delays anticipated in areas observing a non-school or local holiday on Monday.

Travellers should also be aware of a major international sporting event in Pamplona from Wednesday, which will likely affect road access to the city.

Monday, 3rd November 2025

The primary factor affecting traffic today is the aftermath of the All Saints’ Day weekend, particularly the “puente” holiday. The DGT anticipates high return traffic volume throughout the day on major access roads leading into large urban areas, as holidaymakers complete their journeys.

Regional Congestion: Significant delays are expected on the major radial motorways feeding into Madrid (A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5, A-6), especially in the late afternoon and evening (16:00 to 22:00).

Holiday Impact: Several regions, including Madrid, Galicia, Aragón, and Asturias, as well as provinces in Andalusia (such as Córdoba, Granada, and Almería), are observing a non-school or local holiday. This will maintain higher traffic volumes on secondary and coastal roads in these areas as families take advantage of the long weekend. Expect delays on the A-92 (Andalusia) and coastal roads in Galicia.

Urban Traffic: While Madrid is on holiday, major cities not observing the day off, such as Barcelona, will experience their typical high morning rush hour, exacerbated by the return traffic from the weekend. The B-10 (Ronda Litoral) and B-20 (Ronda de Dalt) will be heavily affected.

Tuesday, 4th November 2025

Traffic is expected to return to near-normal weekday levels across the national network.

Rush Hour: Standard morning (07:00-09:30) and evening (17:00-20:00) congestion is forecast around all major cities, with the most significant impact on the ring roads and urban access routes of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville.

Minor Delays: The DGT reports no major national incidents or planned works for this day, but commuters should check local updates for minor roadworks, especially in city centres where Ayuntamientos are managing local infrastructure projects.

Wednesday, 5th November 2025

A significant sporting event begins today, which will affect traffic in the north.

Sporting Event Impact (Pamplona): The Trampoline World Championships begin in Pamplona (Navarre), running through to Sunday. Increased arrival traffic, particularly of international delegations and spectators, is anticipated on the A-15 (Autovía de Leitzaran) and the AP-15 (Autopista de Navarra) into Pamplona. Local traffic measures and potential diversions around the competition venue should be expected, primarily affecting the urban road network.

General Traffic: Standard weekday commuter traffic is expected elsewhere.

Thursday, 6th November 2025

Normal weekday traffic conditions are expected, with local caution advised for the Pamplona event.

Pamplona: Continued elevated local traffic around the sports venue. Attendees and local residents should use public transport or pre-arranged parking where possible to avoid congestion.

Maintenance Works: Overnight or low-impact daytime maintenance works may be scheduled on less-used sections of the national motorway network, particularly the A-66 (Ruta de la Plata) and the A-7 (Autovía del Mediterráneo). Drivers are advised to watch for temporary lane closures.

Friday, 7th November 2025

The usual high-volume start to the weekend is expected, compounded by the sporting events in the north and the Balearic Islands.

Weekend Exodus: High-volume traffic is forecast from mid-afternoon (15:00 onwards) as people leave urban centres for leisure destinations. This will particularly affect the radial motorways out of Madrid and the AP-7 (Autopista del Mediterráneo) in Catalonia and the Valencian Community heading towards the coast and mountain regions.

Sporting Event Impact (Pamplona & Palma de Mallorca): The Trampoline Championships in Pamplona continue, maintaining congestion. Additionally, the Fencing World Cup starts in Palma de Mallorca, which will place a strain on roads around the venue and the airport access in Mallorca.

HGV Restrictions: The DGT will be implementing increased controls on Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in specific corridors during peak hours to ease congestion.

The Weekend

The weekend will be marked by two major international sporting events which will cause localised delays and traffic increases.

Saturday, 8th November: Standard leisure traffic heading towards beaches, mountain, and shopping centres will be high, particularly from morning until early afternoon. The sporting events in Pamplona and Palma de Mallorca will continue to be the main traffic disruptors in those respective areas. Local police in Palma are expected to manage traffic flows around the competition venues, leading to minor diversions.

Sunday, 9th November: The day will be dominated by return movements, especially on motorways leading back into Madrid and Barcelona from 17:00 onwards. A major running event, The Grand Mediterranean 21K Run, is scheduled in Alicante, and the local Policía Local will implement road closures and diversions on the relevant urban and coastal roads. Drivers in the Alicante area should check local Ayuntamiento updates for specific diversion routes.
