Listen "Episode 21 - Joel Murray"
Episode Synopsis
Joel describes himself as an average runner in primary and and early high school. In fact, Joel actually took up swimming and riding during high school due to a growth injury called Osgood Schlatter syndrome. To his credit, he did start to become a rather strong runner in the later years of high school, particularly over the shorter distance running events, such as 800m. Post high school, due to taking up cycling and swimming in school itself, Joel pursued triathlon along with running. He then moved away as a teacher and enjoyed some success up in far north Queensland for a period of time and returned to Brisbane at around the age of 30. It was during this time that he had a few children and started to commence his career as a multi-sport race announcer; more particularly in running, swimming, cycling and triathlon amongst many others. Therefore, this interview delves into Joel’s experience across running and triathlon as an athlete and also, his career as a race announcer and what he has learnt through his experiences with both elite athletes and officials, to recreational runners simply crossing race finish lines.
