Today’s word of the day is vicarious.

Vicarious is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.

Vicarious has two definitions. Firstly it describes something as being experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person. Secondly it describes someone or something as acting or done for another person.

An example of the word vicarious used in a sentence would be:

I do lots of window shopping because it brings me vicarious pleasure in luxury living.

Or, She takes vicarious pride in her daughter's success.

Synonyms: indirect, second-hand, derivative, surrogate, empathic.

Antonyms: direct, first-hand, personal, self-performed, primary.
