Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is delete.

Delete is a doing word therefore it is a verb.

Delete has four meanings. Firstly it is to remove or obliterate written or printed matter, usually by drawing a line through it. Secondly it is to remove data from a computer's memory. Thirdly it is to remove a product from a catalogue so that it can't be purchased. Lastly, in genetics, referring to a section of genetic code or its product, it is to be lost or excised from a nucleic acid or protein sequence.

An example of the word delete used as a verb in a sentence would be:

We decided to delete the passage because it made the text too long and it wasn't necessary.

My phone memory is getting full so I'll need to delete some files.

They had to delete the jumper from their online store since nobody was buying it.

Or, If you hypothetically delete an important gene from a DNA sequence, other genes can actually stand in.

Delete can also be used as a noun, naming a command or key on a computer that is used to erase things such as text or files.

An example of the word delete used as a noun in a sentence would be:

Select the file and press the delete button to erase it.

Or, You can use delete to remove text on the right side of the cursor.

Synonyms: remove, erase, expunge, cancel, kill.

Antonyms: add, insert, include, create, build.
