Listen "Focusing on Opportunities in Business Rather Than Outcomes with: Arias WebsterBerry"

Episode Synopsis

According to a September 2023 Pew Research Center survey,
more than one in five Black adults in the United States believe that owning a
business is essential for achieving financial success. Although Black-owned
businesses have experienced significant growth in recent years, they still
represent a small percentage of overall firms and revenue in the U.S., based on
our analysis of federal data.

In 2021, majority Black-owned businesses accounted for only
about 3% of all U.S. firms that could be classified by the race and ethnicity
of their owners. These businesses generated just 1% of the total gross revenue
from all classifiable companies that year, while roughly 14% of the American
population identified as Black.

In 2021, Black or African American majority-owned firms
provided income for approximately 1.4 million workers, with estimated annual
payrolls of $53.6 billion. However, most Black-owned firms tend to be smaller
enterprises. Two-thirds of these businesses had fewer than 10 employees, 13%
had between 10 and 49 employees, and only 3% had 50 or more employees.
Additionally, 16% reported having no employees at all (employment size is
determined by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period according
to the ABS).
