Listen "October 30 2025 - A Road of Goats, Holes, and Firsts: Car-Camping in Rural Africa"
Episode Synopsis
📍 LocationKoundara → Rural backroads of West Africa (October 30th)📝 Episode NotesOn October 30th, I left Kundara again—a busy, chaotic place—and hit the road without much of a breakfast. Early on, I finally met someone who made sense when it came to exchanging money. I swapped $200 and ended up with a ridiculous inch-and-a-half stack of bills. That’s just how currency works out here. The roads were an adventure of their own. Old tarmac full of deep holes, improvised trails running alongside them, and constant slow progress as I sculpted my way forward. Every now and then I crossed a bridge with a stunning river view, a moment that reminded me why I’m doing this trip in the first place.People appeared almost everywhere along the roadside, even when I couldn’t see a village. Life stretches far beyond the main tracks and trails. And the goats—so many goats. Goats have been a constant in Africa, along with the occasional herd of cows wandering across the landscape. As daylight faded, I didn’t want to risk driving in the dark, and there were no guesthouses anywhere. So we decided to camp. We found a small spot just off the road, but with rain threatening, pitching the tent didn’t seem smart. Instead, for the first time, we slept inside the car. It was tight and a bit awkward, a first for Johan, but somehow we made it work and got enough rest to call it a win.It was a day of very few miles, but plenty of moments. Thanks for coming along.⏱️ Key Moments00:00 — Leaving Kundara I start my day in Kundara with no breakfast and a chaotic exchange of money.01:10 — The $200 Money Mountain I walk away with an absurdly thick stack of bills after exchanging cash.02:00 — Navigating Terrible Roads I deal with cratered tarmac, side trails, and painfully slow progress.03:10 — Bridges & Beautiful Rivers I get brief moments of wonder crossing rivers with stunning scenery.03:45 — Life Along the Road I notice how people and livestock—especially goats—are everywhere.05:00 — Running Out of Daylight I decide it’s time to stop and look for a place to sleep.05:30 — Choosing to Camp With no guesthouses around, camping becomes the only option.06:00 — First Time Sleeping in the Car Rain threatens, so instead of pitching a tent, Johan and I car-camp for the first time.07:00 — Ending the Day Tight quarters, enough sleep, and reflections on a slow-moving but memorable day.
